A hook is the first two or three seconds of a short video: the line, image or on-screen text that has to stop someone scrolling their feed. In 2026, three kinds of tools help you write it. The first start from videos that actually outperformed (Creadar, Sandcastles, Virlo). The second store hooks you can reuse: swipe files and libraries (Foreplay, TikTok Creative Center’s Top Ads). The last generate hooks with AI from your topic (Submagic, Buffer). This comparison covers seven tools, their November 2026 prices and what each one really brings to your hook.

What to expect from a hook tool

Proof that the hook worked, at the scale of its creator. A video with a million views from an account that always gets that many doesn’t teach you much. A video that clearly beats its creator’s median signals that something changed, and the opening is the first place to look.

Access to the first seconds themselves. The hook is often spoken or written on screen, and the caption doesn’t always repeat it. A good tool lets you watch the video, or gives you its transcript.

A place to store what you find. A ghostwriter or an agency reuses hook structures from one client to the next. Without a swipe file, good finds get lost in the app’s favorites.

Quick variations, as long as you can sort them. An AI generator suggests lines in seconds, but it starts from your topic and general formulas, without knowing what worked in your niche. It helps you vary a structure, not pick one.

How we chose

We picked tools that help you find, store or write the hook of a short video, in three groups: data-driven tools, swipe files and hook libraries, and AI generators from established companies. We left out hook apps whose makers don’t describe how they work or what they cost. Prices are public prices as of November 2026. Creadar is our product: we rated it with the same criteria as the other tools, and its limits are listed in its card.

The best hook tools for TikTok and Reels

Creadar

The openings of the videos that outperform in your watchlist

  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • YouTube Shorts
  • Starting price €18/month

Creadar doesn’t write hooks: it shows you where to look. You add Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts accounts to a watchlist, and every video whose views or engagement reach 3 times the median of the creator’s last 20 eligible videos gets flagged. You then open the video in Creadar to watch its first seconds and read its caption.

Best for Ghostwriters, creators and agencies who write their own hooks and want to start from the videos that truly beat the norm of the accounts they follow

Strengths

  • Threshold relative to each account: a small creator’s outperforming hook stands out as much as a big account’s
  • Video page with a built-in player, caption, hashtags, duration, sound and, on TikTok, the searches suggested under the video
  • Collections to save the videos whose openings inspire you, like a swipe file
  • An outliers-only filter to find the hooks that outperform without scrolling every account
  • Read-only connector to query your tracked accounts from Claude or ChatGPT (Creator and Pro plans)

Limitations

  • Writes no hooks or scripts with AI: the tool shows the videos, you write the hook
  • No transcripts: a spoken hook has to be heard in the player
  • Only tracks accounts added to a watchlist, with no keyword search or account discovery
  • Daily data collection, and only Shorts on YouTube
  • New product, with less of a public track record than older players

Pricing Starter at €18/month (1 watchlist, 10 creators), Creator at €35/month (2 watchlists, 30 creators, Claude/ChatGPT connector), Pro at €95/month (unlimited watchlists, 100 creators). Billed yearly: €180, €348 and €948 a year. One-time free preview of 3 accounts, no credit card required. Public pricing, November 2026

In Creadar, a flagged video opens on a page that plays it, with its caption, hashtags, duration and sound. You watch the opening, save the video to a collection if its structure interests you, then write your own version.

From a spotted video to your own hook

Data-driven tools show you where to look, and the writing is still up to you. A three-step method:

  1. Spot. Start from the videos that clearly beat their creator’s norm in your niche, rather than the most-viewed ones.
  2. Name the mechanism. Write down in one line what the opening does: a question, a contrarian take, a promise with a number, an experiment with a time frame.
  3. Rewrite it for your topic. Keep the mechanism, change the content, then compare the published video with your own median.

Here are two openings from October 2026 in our demo account, which tracks French-speaking accounts. The first hook is translated; the second is quoted in the original French.

×58 its median @emmafitnessgoal, TikTok41.5K views “That’s the trap: thinking you need to diet when the problem is 100% digestive.” Watch the video by @emmafitnessgoal on TikTok (opens in a new tab)
×15.5 its median @antoineblanco99, TikTok17.4K views “Qu’est-ce qui se passe quand tu laisses Claude gérer tes DM Instagram pendant 8 jours ?” Watch the video by @antoineblanco99 on TikTok (opens in a new tab)
  • @emmafitnessgoal opens with a contrarian take: she names a common belief, going on a diet, and flips it. Her video got 41,465 views, 58x the median of her last 20 videos.
  • @antoineblanco99 asks a question about a time-boxed experiment: “What happens when you let Claude handle your Instagram DMs for 8 days?” His video got 17,413 views, 15.5x his median.

A hook never explains a performance on its own: the topic, the sound or pinning also play a part. Creadar flags pinned videos and paid partnerships, which can inflate views regardless of the opening.

How to choose

You write your own hooks and already follow a list of accounts: Creadar, to see which videos from those accounts beat 3 times their median and study how they open.

You want to go from a spotted video to a written hook in the same tool: Sandcastles, with its hook templates and transcripts, or Virlo, which analyzes the hooks of outperforming videos.

You write ad hooks (UGC, sponsored Reels or TikToks): Foreplay for a team swipe file, and TikTok Creative Center’s Top Ads to see high-performing TikTok ads for free.

You have the topic but not the first line: Submagic’s or Buffer’s free generators, then sort their suggestions against the videos that worked.

You want to test without paying: Virlo’s free hook library, TikTok Creative Center, or Creadar’s free 3-account preview, with no credit card.

A hook works together with its topic: our comparison of tools to find TikTok video ideas helps you choose what to say before you choose how to open. To judge a video once it’s live, see how many views a TikTok video needs to be considered viral and the average engagement rate on TikTok and Instagram. And if your best hooks bring views but no sales, read why the most-viewed video isn’t the one that sells.
